First Aid: What to Do Before You Get Here
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time is critical – every minute counts!
- Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (white part), never the root
- Gently rinse with water if dirty (don't scrub)
- Try to put it back in the socket if possible
- If you can't reinsert it, store it in milk or your saliva
- Never use tap water or let the tooth dry out
- Get to our office within 30-60 minutes for the best chance of saving it
Severe Tooth Pain
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed on the package
- Use a cold compress on the outside of your face (not heat)
- Never put aspirin directly on your gums
Broken or Cracked Tooth
- Save any tooth pieces you can find
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Apply cold compress to reduce swelling
- Avoid chewing on that side
Bleeding from Your Mouth
- Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze for 10-15 minutes
- Use a cold compress on the outside
- If bleeding doesn't stop after 20 minutes, call us immediately
Lost Crown or Filling
- Keep the crown if you can find it
- Avoid chewing on that tooth
- You can temporarily cover the area with sugar-free gum if needed
- Don't use household glue or cement
